The most chilling time of the year is just around the corner and if you are tired of watching the same old Halloween movies, animes are here to pull you out of your comfort zone! Don’t be fooled by the cute visuals and animation, there is a listless catalog of horror and supernatural titles.

They may not be that popular, but that doesn’t mean they lack quality, as they have original plots full of blood, despair, and situations that will make you feel sick. Having you in mind, a true otaku MyFamilier in search of excitement, My Family Cinema has selected a few titles to make this Halloween scarier than ever. ヽ(゚Д゚)ノ

Tokyo Ghoul (2014)

Based on Sui Ishida’s manga, Tokyo Ghoul portraits a world inhabited by humans and ghouls, creatures who have the appearance of common people, but in reality, they are flesh-eating monsters. Kaneki Ken, a young student, is lured by a woman who is, in fact, a ghoul, but he doesn’t realize it in time. Miraculously, he survives the encounter, however, due to his injuries, he ends up becoming a monstrous hybrid.

Higurashi When They Cry (2006)

This anime is a perfect example of how looks can be deceiving. It’s become such a classic that it already has a remake produced in 2020 currently streaming on Funimation. Inspired by the 07th Expansion’s videogame, we follow Maebara Keiichi, who recently moved to Hinamizawa, a tiny village in a rural area. However, the peacefulness of the place changes after the arrival of the Watanagashi festival. Now, Maebara Keiichi and his friends need to discover all the hidden secrets and survive.

Another (2012)

Sakakibara Kouichi, a high school student, moves to his mother’s hometown. In his new school, he notices that his classmates are truly friendly. However, there is a strange aura around them and they don’t mix up with the rest of the school. Furthermore, he starts to see a girl who everyone else ignores. Doubting his own sanity and trying to make sense of the countless puzzling deaths that are happening, Sakakibara Kouichi must solve this mystery.

Perfect Blue (1997)

This anime is closer to reality than we can imagine, proving that not only monsters and creatures from other worlds can be terrifying. Perfect Blue, a masterpiece of Satoshi Kon, tells the story of Mima Kirigoe, a pop-group singer who decides to pursue her career as an actress. But what should be a dream becomes a nightmare when the raw reality of the world hits Mima, affecting her mental health and putting everyone at risk.
