Buckle up, folks, Rick and Morty and their 5th season multiverse await!

Wubba lubba dub dub!

Rick and Morty (2013) is, without a doubt, one of the craziest and most incredible animated series of the last decade. It combines space travel, dark humor, strange characters and complicated family relationships… resulting in a politically incorrect series.

Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, Rick and Morty was born as a parody of the movie Back to the Future (1985) and it tells the interdimensional adventures of Rick Sánchez, a crazy and alcoholic scientist that surprises everyone with his brilliance, and Morty Smith, a gullible, insecure and anxiety suffering teenager that becomes more and more intrepid with time. Together they embark on journeys that take them to visit bizarre but fascinating planets, creatures and alternate realities.

Since its fifth season is premiering June 20th on Adult Swim and HBO Max, we propose a fun recapitulation of the story and its maybe still unknown curiosities. If you still haven’t watched any of the seasons… what are you waiting for?

Throughout the series, we can see that the authors included references to the mythical South Park (1997), Futurama (1999) and Family Guy (1999), animated series that changed the way of humor usually found in these kinds of entertainment. Visually, we can also spot similarities with The Ren & Stimpy Show (1991) by John Kricfalusi and Beavis and Butt-Head (1993) by Mike Judge. The latter, apart from being the series creator, is also the voice of the two main characters, same as Roiland is Rick and Morty’s.

It is a fact that nowadays, Easter eggs can be found everywhere. What are they, you may ask. Just hidden messages and signs left to the audience by content creators. In the case of Rick and Morty, this resource is perfectly used to refer to the popular Gravity Falls (2012). The creators of both series are big friends and they acknowledged to have intentionally added them in order to entertain the fans and themselves. A clear example of this is the brief appearance of the Gravity Falls evil villain Bill Cipher in Rick and Morty. Another Easter egg Roiland introduced was the superheroe team he created as an excuse to mock the latest fashion imposed by the movies The Avengers (2012) and Guardians of the Galaxy (2014).

To close up this beautiful walkthrough of the first four seasons, we chose three of the best episode that you must watch before starting the fifth season off:

• The series, apart from having gags and pop culture allusions, is filled with good music of different genres. In the episode “Get Schwifty” of the second season, Earth is in danger after the invasion of a huge alien with peculiar musical demands. Therefore, Rick and Morty resort to Ice-T who helps them write a song they will perform on an intergalactic music competition. If the evil alien likes the song, the world is saved; otherwise, everyone dies. As expected, Rick has an ace up his sleeve that will help him save humanity once again.

• The episode of the third season titled “Pickle Rick” represents a turn of screw to the series and shows a Rick turned into a pickle as a consequence of one of his manic experiments sorting adversity once again. Indubitably, Rick can turn out to be pretty dangerous.

• To this day, probably the best episode of the series is “The Ricklantis Mixup” due to its anthology theme. In it, we follow the “everyday” life of various Citadel citizens. Apart from the intrinsic message that Morty is key to Rick, the episode grants us with one of the best endings: an unexpected plot twist.

Anyway… We cannot wait to see what happens on this new season that will come with loads of stories, characters and ridiculous adventures divided into 10 episodes that will premiere weekly.

Don’t forget to leave us a comment sharing your favorite season so far.

Oh! And if you feel guilty about not watching the series, do yourself a favor and binge-watch it as soon as possible.
