A dystopian future not so far away… Blame!
The conversation about a post-apocalyptic world has been on the rise, especially after the last two erratic years that we have experienced. It’s no wonder that we are attracted to a reality so distant, but so close at the same time.
Cyberpunk is a successful genre in the anime universe. Normally, it portrays worlds dominated by technology and machines where humans are seen as plagues, which are either on extinction or overpopulated, affected by misery, desolation and a strong social oppression. Unfortunately, we are not so far away from this, right? (I know, it’s heavy ). Among the most famous animes of the genre, we have Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Cowboy Bebop and Psycho-pass.
Blame! (2017), an anime of this genre, has been receiving a lot of attention lately. Based on the manga released in 1998 by Tsutomu Nihei, this Netflix movie was produced by Polygon Pictures and directed by Hiroyuki Seshita. The story is set in a world dominated by machines after humans lose the ability to control technology, becoming illegal residents and starting to be hunted down by cyborgs. A few survivors take refuge in a place where the machines can’t get close. However, in order to get food, they have to explore the city, which contains several levels, controlled by the Watchtower and the Exterminators patrolling. As the resources are getting more limited, a group of teenagers go in search of food and meet a mysterious human called Killy. But the big question is: How did he survive until now? The enigma grows when Killy reveals that he is looking for people that have a certain gene capable of regaining the city’s control.
The anime received a lot of critics due to script inconsistency, but even so, it is considered a visual spectacle and a good introduction into the cyberpunk world. Here’s a little preview…
