The new Lord of the Rings series
Coming Soon
The massive success of Game of Thrones was an unprecedented event for television, so other producers didn’t lose time to develop their own epic fantasy series.
After winning a battle against Netflix for the rights of The Lord of the Rings, Amazon Studios is going all in with a new series based on the saga created by J. R. R. Tolkien and considered one of the most important pieces in fantastic literature.

In this new series, Amazon will explore times never seen before in the cinematographic adaptations of The Lord of the Rings, directed by Peter Jackson. The story will take place during the Second Age of Middle-earth, long before what we’ve seen in The Hobbit, and will tell the events that triggered the fall of the legendary island of Númenor.
With a budget of $200 million per season, the new Lord of the Rings series will become the most expensive television series in history, surpassing the $130 million of The Crown and setting high expectations against the budget of $100 million for the sixth season of Game of Thrones.
The Lord of the Rings series is produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, organizations dedicated to the protection and management of J. R. R. Tolkien works, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema, studio responsible for the wonderful Lord of the Rings films, which won 17 Oscars and are cherished by both critics and fans.
JD Payne and Patrick McKay will be the showrunners of the series, along with Bryan Cogman as executive producer and creative consultant. Although the cast has not been announced yet, it was confirmed that the young actress Markella Kavenagh will play a new character named Tyra.
Amazon plans to release the new Lord of the Rings series in 2021, with a length of at least 5 seasons.
