MonsterVerse: Godzilla vs. Kong
Coming Soon
Due to the success of Marvel Studios, the world has been taken over by cinematic universes. More and more studios are starting to take a chance on creating their own shared universes through films and the MonsterVerse is one of the most promising.
Co-produced by Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros., the MonsterVerse started with Godzilla (2014), a franchise reboot of the legendary Toho monster, who has more than 30 movies under its belt. The film was directed by Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, 2016), and starred by Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, 2008-2013), Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen, who had previously worked together on Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015).
This new story introduces us Monarch, a secret agency dedicated to the study of the M.U.T.O. (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism), giant creatures that wake up from a long sleep to reclaim the Earth. Among these monsters is Godzilla, who will fight against fearsome threats to protect the natural balance.
The film had such a successful premiere that two sequels were approved only two days after its release. Although at first the original plan was to produce a Godzilla trilogy, this changed in 2015, when Legendary announced that it would move the production of a King Kong film from Universal to Warner Bros., officially starting the MonsterVerse.
Kong: Skull Island (2017) was a reboot for the famous monster King Kong’s franchise, putting it into a larger narrative. Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and starring Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson and Brie Larson, all present in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the film presents us with a young Kong who is hunted by Monarch, the secret agency first introduced in Godzilla.
To expand the universe, on May 31th 2019, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the third installment of the MonsterVerse, will be released. Directed by Michael Dougherty (X-Men: Apocalypse, 2016) and starring by Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things, 2016-today) and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones, 2011-2015), in this film, we will see Godzilla together with several classic Toho characters, such as Mothra, the giant moth, Gigan the pterodactyl and the fearsome three-headed dragon King Ghidora. In the meanwhile, we are waiting for the final encounter between the Legendary titans in Godzilla vs. Kong, to be released in 2020.
