Con un estimado de 90.000 millones de dólares de ganancias hasta marzo de 2017, Pokémon es la franquicia multimedia más rentable de la historia, y Detective Pikachu, la primera película live action de Pokémon, se apoderó de los cines del mundo en mayo de 2019.

 

Basada en el videojuego del mismo nombre para Nintendo 3DS, Detective Pikachu fue dirigida por Rob Letterman (Monstruos vs. Aliens, 2009) y protagonizada por Justice Smith (Jurassic World: El reino caído, 2018), Kathryn Newton (Actividad Paranormal 4, 2012) y Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool, 2016) como la voz de Pikachu.

 

La película nos cuenta la historia de Tim Goodman (Justice Smith), un joven que viaja a la imponente ciudad de Ryme City en busca de su padre. Para encontrarlo, Tim unirá fuerzas con el compañero Pokémon de su padre, un Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) con el que comparte una extraña conexión que les permite comprenderse.

 

Después de una lucha secreta en la que Legendary Entertainment, Sony Pictures y Warner Bros. Pictures compitieron por los derechos, en julio de 2016 se anunció finalmente que sería Legendary Entertainment quien llevaría a cabo la película, iniciando su producción en el 2017 bajo la supervisión de The Pokémon Company.

 

Con cerca de 60 Pokémon de los más de 800 que existen en la franquicia, Detective Pikachu optó por un estilo más realista en el diseño de las criaturas, basado en el trabajo realizado por el artista R. J. Palmer, un simple fanático que, gracias a sus habilidades, fue invitado a trabajar en el proyecto como artista conceptual y consultor.

 

A pesar de tener un guion promedio, Detective Pikachu resultó una película bastante entretenida. Teniendo en cuenta el rotundo fracaso que fueron la mayoría de las adaptaciones fílmicas de videojuegos, Detective Pikachu logra superar las expectativas y ha sido bien recibida tanto por fanáticos como por la crítica.

 

Si bien no es una de las mejores películas del año, Detective Pikachu logra recrear el mundo Pokémon de la mejor forma posible, con una historia llena de humor que terminó complaciendo tanto al espectador casual como a los seguidores más antiguos de la franquicia, dejándolos ansiosos por nuevas películas dentro del mismo universo.
