Extraction
MFC Review
Chris Hemsworth, who plays superhero Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, teams up again with Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of Avengers: Endgame (2019) and other MCU films, to bring us Extraction (2020), an exciting new action movie on Netflix.
In Extraction, Chris Hemsworth stars as Tyler Rake, a mercenary on a mission to rescue the son of an Indian drug lord, kidnapped by an enemy cartel. During his journey, Rake will be involved in scenes filled with action, danger and violence. This film is the directorial debut of Sam Hargrave, who previously worked as stunt coordinator in Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), both films directed by the Russo Brothers. The script is based on the graphic novel Ciudad, written by the very Russo Brothers, who also happen to have produced the film.
Despite having a premise previously used in many other films, Extraction applies it as a guide to focus on creating several of the genre’s most ambitious action scenes. Hargrave‘s directing pays special attention to the choreographic sequences and special effects that make up the bulk of the film, and then takes short breaks in scenes that he uses for the simple but effective development of his characters.
The film was heavily criticized due to the high level of violence in some of its scenes, but received generally positive reviews for its technical achievements. Extraction is a film that takes the action genre a step further when it comes to stunt coordination and opens the door to Hargrave‘s promising future as a director.
