The month of May is celebrated in many countries around the world as “Mother’s Day”: Spain, Portugal, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, the Philippines and the United States are just some of the countries that celebrate all their mothers during the month of May. From MFC, we bring you this list of five movies starring mothers in a variety of genres: comedy, science fiction, drama and more.
1- ANATOMY OF A FALL

One of the best films of last year and, therefore, of the great films in the Oscar Awards 2024. The story begins with the death of Samuel Theis (Samuel Maleski), who falls from the highest floor of his house in the French Alps. Sandra Voyter (Sandra Hüller), Samuel’s wife and mother of Daniel (Milo Machado-Graner), is the main suspect in the crime. The film surrounds the court battle that ensues and how Sandra’s son also plays a central role in solving the case. Anatomy of a Fall won numerous awards worldwide and won Best Original Screenplay at this year’s Oscars.
2- EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE AT THE ALL ONCE

The film that swept the 2022 Oscar Awards winning in the categories of Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress (for Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actor (for Ke Huy Quan) and Best Supporting Actress (for Jamie Lee Curtis), shows the life of Evelyn (Michelle Yeoh), a Chinese immigrant in the United States, who due to an interdimensional rupture is lost in the infinite worlds of the multiverse and is the only one who can channel her new powers to fight the dangers of this reality. The film also emphasizes the mother-daughter relationship between Evelyn and Joy Wang (Stephanie Hsu), who had many fights in everyday life and this battle against evil brings them together.
3- THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI
Film Genre: Drama, Mystery, Crime
Running time: 115 minutes

Tells the struggle of a mother (Frances McDormand) who, fed up with the failure to find the culprit of her daughter’s murder, buys and places three accusatory signs at the entrance of a U.S. town against the local police chief (Woody Harrelson), who made no effort to solve the case. An intense drama with good touches of dark humor and sensation performances that earned McDormand the 2018 Best Actress Oscar and Best Supporting Actor for Sam Rockwell, in addition to five other nominations. Although the film is not based on real events, the plot is inspired by the lonely and tireless struggle of a mother to find justice for the loss of her daughter.
4- the blind side

Based on the book The Blind Side: The Evolution of a Game by Michael Lewis, the film tells the story of 17-year-old Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron), who after living with several families due to his mother’s drug addiction, is taken in by Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock), a strong-willed interior designer and wife of wealthy businessman Sean Tuohy (Tim McGraw). The film, nominated for an Oscar for “Best Picture”, shows Big Mike’s growth as a high school athlete, the colleges’ interest in recruiting him and how Leigh Anne supported him throughout his formative career. A sensational performance by Sandra Bullock that won her the Oscar for Best Actress in 2009.
5- MAMMA MIA!

The film is based on the famous Broadway musical “Mamma Mia”, which incorporated the most famous songs of the famous Swedish group ABBA. The story shows Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfried) who is a 20-year-old girl who is about to marry Sky (Dominic Cooper). Her mother, Donna (Meryl Streep), has never told her who her father is and everything gets complicated when Sam Carmichael (Pierce Brosnan), Harry Bright (Colin Firth) and Bill Anderson (Stellan Skarsgård) arrive at the wedding and meet with Sophie and Donna to define who is the father of the bride-to-be. Mamma Mia is a modern-day classic and a perfect plan to celebrate Mother’s Day with laughter, excitement and good music.
