International Day of the Family: 5 series to watch and celebrate the day

Every year on May 15, the “International Day of Families” is celebrated around the world, a special day where people in every country gather as a family to celebrate. From MFC, we invite you to remember, through a movie or series, the laughter, tears and difficult circumstances that every human being has lived with his family. These are 5 series where the fundamental pillar is the union in the family regardless of the stumbling blocks that life brings.

1. MODERN FAMILY

“Modern Family” documentary-style series portraying the lives of the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan

Modern Family tells the life of three families very different from the typical traditional family. This cast starred Ed O’Neill, Ty Burrell, Sofia Vergara, Eric Stonestreet, Julie Bowen, Ariel Winter, Sarah Hyland and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, among others. It premiered in 2009 and ended after 11 seasons in 2020. It is worth noting that in 2012 it won the Golden Globe for best TV series Comedy or Musical and was nominated for several categories at the Emmy Awards, winning the award for best comedy series in 2014. 2. IWÁJÚ

“Iwájú” animated miniseries to the world of science fiction

This miniseries is based on Tola, a girl who lives on an island in Lagos, Nigeria, who has many assets and wealth, where together with her best friend, Kole, a technology expert, they will discover the secrets and danger facing their worlds. The series premiered on April 3, 2024 and features 6 episodes. The original voices are by Simisola Gbadamosi (Tola), Siji Soetan (Kole), Femi Branch (Bode), among others. This series also marked a milestone in the industry, as it was the first deal between Walt Disney Animation Studios and Kugali Media, a pan-African entertainment company. 3. BLACK-ISH

“Black Ish” series about an upper class family with money and luxury, nothing is as it seems

One of the best series of recent years and nominated for the Emmy Awards 2017. It tells the story of a wealthy upper-class family consisting of Dre Jhonson (Anthony Anderson), an employee of a prestigious advertising firm, his physician wife, Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross) and their four children. Dre and Rainbow have been married for several years and their relationship is the envy of the neighborhood, although raising their four children is far from easy; what Dre Jhonson is most concerned about is losing herAfrican-American identity and she will do everything she can to instill her cultural identity in her children. This series began in 2014and ended in 2022 with a total of 8 seasons. Black-Ish is the classic family comedy ideal for moments where the family gets together. 

4. THE MIDDLE

“The Middle” An atypical middle-class family in the United States

Each scene of the series “The Middle” reflects the life of a mother and father who struggle to give the best upbringing to their children. The story is centered in the town of Orson in  Indiana, where they show an atypical middle-class family in the United States. This film consists of Frankie (Patricia Heaton), a struggling, hard-working mother and homemaker, her husband Mike (Neil Flynn), who works at a local quarry, and their three sons, Axl Heck (Charlie McDermott), Sue Heck (Eden Sher) and Brick Heck (Atticus Shaffer) This series kicked off in 2009 and ended in 2018 with a total of 9 seasons. If you think your life is ordinary, this series is the ideal one for you and your family: you will feel identified more than ever with every scene.

5. BOB’S BURGERS

“Bob’s Burgers” Animated series of the Belcher family (Bob, Linda, Tina, Gene and Louise)

This is the story of a family with different personalities, but with the same goal: to achieve success in the hamburger restaurant “Bob’s Burgers”, which has the particularity of being located between a crematorium and a headquarters of an organization that fights for animal rights. This animated series premiered in 2011 and continues to this day. It has a great comedy part where it will make you laugh in each of its chapters. In 2017,  it won the Creative Emmy Award for best animated series category, competing with South Park, The Simpsons, Archer and Elena of Avalor. Last but not least is the series “The Kids are Alright”, created by producer Tim Doyle. It tells the story of an Irish Catholic family in the 1970s’ and stars Michael Cudlitz (The Walking Dead), as Mike, the husband of this large family, and Mary McCormack (Uncovered), as Peggy, the mother and housewife. Between the two of them, they must raise their 8 male children, but every situation that comes their way they must deal with the togetherness of this chaotic family. It was released in 2018, it consists of one season with 23 episodes. If you thought your family is large, you have to watch this series and see their lifestyle, a hidden gem of Sitcoms.
