So, MyFamilier, sit back and enjoy these spoiler-free details of the movie that is generating a buzz around the world in its first weeks of release.

WHAT CHALLENGERS IS ABOUT

The film tells the story of the love triangle between tennis players Tashi Duncan (Zendaya), Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor) and Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), who maintain a bond of love and friendship from the time they are teenagers and compete in junior tournaments, until they are professionals and participate in major tournaments. The relationship between the three is presented during the development of the final of a Challenger tennis tournament between Patrick and Art, who is coached by his wife, Tashi, who watches from the stands.

CHOICE OF CAST

The movie features the main performances of Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, Mike Faist, as well as Jake Jensen, Faith Fay, A.J. Lister, and Scottie DiGiacomo, among others. Luca Guadagnino, director of films like “Call Me by Your Name” and “Bones And All”, received the script from Amy Pascal and immediately accepted to take over the direction of the film. Guadagnino promptly approached Zendaya for the lead role; the response was positive, and Zendaya even joined the team as a producer.

TENNIS TRAINING

The central axis of the film is tennis, so it was mandatory that the actors of Challengers know how to play with ease: the three attended six months of intensive tennis lessons at a camp and developed their skills. “The first few classes I would hit the ball and send it into the trees, but then I thought if I’m a dancer I should see tennis as choreography,” Zendaya confessed in an interview.
