The road to the Oscars begins, almost indisputably, a little less than a year earlier with the celebration of the Cannes Film Festival, where films, performances and montages that promise to leave their mark on the American red carpet during the month of February of the following year begin to be screened.
WHEN WILL THE CANNES FESTIVAL 2024 TAKE PLACE?
The 77th edition of Cannes will be held from May 14 to 25 at the Palais des Festivals et des Congres, located on La Croisette promenade;
WHO WILL BE THE JURORS AT THE CANNES FESTIVAL?
American filmmaker and actress Greta Gerwig, director of Barbie, will preside over the main competition jury. She will be joined by Lily Gladstone (“Mollie Burkhart” in Killers of the Flower Moon), Eva Green (“Milady” in The Three Musketeers), Juan Antonio Bayona (director of The Snow Society) and Omar Sy (“Assane Diop” in Lupin), among other directors.
WHICH FILMS ARE COMPETING FOR THE PALM D’OR
The first heavyweight of this edition is Megalopolis, by Francis Ford Coppola, director of films such as The Godfather, Apocalypse Now and Dracula, who has not yet managed to get a distributor to release his film and will seek the great feat of being the first director in history with three Palmes d’Or.
De todas formas, no la tendrá fácil, ya que compite con las siguientes películas: All We Imagine as Light (de Payal Kapadia), Anora (de Sean Baker), The Apprentice (de Ali Abbasi), Barnyard (de Gilles Lellouche), Bird (de Andrea Arnold con Barry Keoghan), Caught by the Tides (de Jia Zhangke), Emilia Pérez (de Jacques Audiard con Zoe Saldaña y Selena Gomez), The Girl with the Needle (de Magnus von Horn), Grand Tour (de Miguel Gomes), Kinds of Kindness (de Yorgos Lanthimos, con Emma Stone), Limonov: The Ballad (de Kirill Serebrennikov), Marcello Mio (de Christophe Honoré), Motel Destino (de Karim Ainouz), Oh, Canadá (de Paul Schrader), Parthenope (de Paolo Sorrentino con Gary Oldman), The Shrouds (de David Cronenberg), The Substance (de Coralie Fargeat) y Wild Diamond (de Agathe Riedinger).
WHO WILL RECEIVE THE HONORARY GOLDEN PALMS
The first Palme d’Or Honorary Award will go to American actress Meryl Streep, one of the most prestigious actresses in the history of Hollywood, with three Oscars and 21 nominations, a record never surpassed in the history of the award. Brilliant performances in “The Sniper”, “Africa Mia”, “Kramer vs. Kramer”, “The Devil Wears Fashion”, among others, are some of her most recognized films;
“I am immensely honored to receive the news of this prestigious award. Winning a prize at Cannes, for the international community of artists, has always represented the highest achievement in the art of cinema,” she said in a statement.
But Streep will not be the only recipient of this award: George Lucas, creator of Star Wars, will also receive this award at the closing ceremony of the event.
WHAT WILL BE THE OPENING FILM OF CANNES 2024?
The film “Le Deuxième Acte” (The Second Act), directed by the always surprising Quentin Dupieux, will open the curtain on the 77th edition of the festival. This surrealist comedy, composed of four parts and with a stellar cast headed by Léa Seydoux, Vincent Lindon and Louis Garrel, will be presented on May 14 as part of the opening ceremony, albeit out of competition.
The Cannes Film Festival is just around the corner and soon you will be able to enjoy all these movies also on the small screen of your favorite friendly platform. MyFamilier, it’s your turn: which of these films are you looking forward to the most? We’ll read you in the comments.
